How Do Laser Skin Treatments Work? A Guide to Alma Harmony XL Pro
If you are considering laser treatment for your skin, one of the first things to understand is that not all lasers do the same job.
What we commonly call “laser treatment” covers several different technologies. Some are designed to target colour in the skin, such as pigmentation or redness. Others work deeper within the skin or resurface it to encourage collagen production and improve texture.
This is why a treatment that works well for sun spots may not be the right choice for acne scarring. Active acne also needs a different approach from the scars it may leave behind.
At Dr Liesel Medical Aesthetics, we use Alma Harmony XL Pro, which gives us access to ClearSkin, ClearLift, iPixel and Dye-VL. Rather than choosing a laser based simply on the name of your concern, we can select the technology according to what is actually happening within your skin.
What Is Alma Harmony XL Pro and How Does It Work?
Alma Harmony XL Pro is an advanced laser and light treatment platform used for concerns including pigmentation, redness, acne, acne scarring, lines and uneven skin texture.
The easiest way to understand it is to think of it as one system containing different tools for different jobs.
Some treatments use light energy to target colour. For example, excess pigment creates brown areas in the skin, while small blood vessels can create visible redness. Other technologies work by heating or resurfacing the skin in a controlled way, triggering a repair response and encouraging new collagen.
At our Chislehurst clinic, we use four main options:
- Dye-VL for pigmentation, redness and visible blood vessels
- ClearSkin for active acne and acne-related concerns
- ClearLift for pigmentation, collagen stimulation and skin rejuvenation
- iPixel for acne scarring, lines and uneven texture
Which treatment we choose depends on the concern, how established it is and the condition of your skin. Someone with a few sun spots will not necessarily need the same approach as someone with widespread pigmentation, just as active breakouts need to be treated differently from indented acne scars.

Can Alma Harmony XL Pro Treat Pigmentation and Sun Damage?
Pigmentation is one of the most common reasons patients consider laser, but the type of pigmentation matters.
Sun exposure can cause melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its colour, to accumulate unevenly. Over time, this can appear as freckles, sun spots or patches of uneven tone, particularly on areas that have had repeated UV exposure.
Dye-VL can target this excess pigment with light energy. The treated pigment may initially become more noticeable before gradually being cleared as the skin renews.
ClearLift may also be considered where pigmentation is accompanied by early signs of ageing or changes in overall skin quality.
However, a brown patch is not automatically sun damage. Pigmentation can also develop after inflammation or be influenced by hormones, as with melasma. Treating these conditions as though they were straightforward sun spots may not give the desired result.
At Dr Liesel Medical Aesthetics, we often see patients who describe all discolouration as “pigmentation”, when there may be several processes involved. Depending on what we find, Alma Harmony XL Pro, medical-grade skincare, Cosmelan® or a chemical peel may be more appropriate.
Can Laser Help Redness and Broken Capillaries?
Redness can sometimes be caused by tiny blood vessels becoming more visible through the skin. This may appear as individual thread veins or more general areas of redness.
Dye-VL uses light that is absorbed by the colour within these vessels. The energy heats the targeted vessel, which can then gradually become less visible.
This is quite different from resurfacing the skin. If the main problem is a visible blood vessel, we want to target the vessel rather than unnecessarily treating the whole skin surface.
However, not all facial redness comes from visible vessels. Skin that is inflamed, irritated or easily flushed may need a different approach. In these cases, we may first concentrate on settling the skin and improving the skin barrier before considering laser.
Can Alma Harmony XL Pro Help With Acne and Acne Scars?
One of the most important distinctions we make is between active acne and the changes acne has already left behind.
ClearSkin is used when active breakouts are the priority. It works beneath the skin’s surface and can help improve active acne while supporting the healing process.
If someone is continuing to develop inflamed spots, we would usually concentrate on bringing those breakouts under better control before aggressively treating scarring. Otherwise, new scars may continue to develop while we are trying to improve older ones.
Once acne has settled, the remaining concern may be quite different. Some patients are left mainly with red or brown marks, while others develop enlarged-looking pores, uneven texture or indented scars.
Where the structure and texture of the skin have changed, iPixel laser resurfacing may be more appropriate. It creates controlled microscopic areas of treatment, triggering the skin’s natural repair response and encouraging collagen production.
As collagen gradually remodels, acne scars and uneven texture can become less noticeable. This process takes time, which is why improvement from resurfacing continues after the initial healing period.
Some patients may therefore move from ClearSkin to iPixel as their skin improves and the treatment priority changes from controlling acne to addressing scarring.
What Is ClearLift and Who Is It Best For?
Not everyone considering laser needs resurfacing. ClearLift works beneath the surface of the skin without removing the top layer. It can be useful for pigmentation, early signs of ageing and general skin rejuvenation, with relatively little downtime.
The treatment creates controlled heating within the skin, which stimulates a repair response and encourages collagen production. Because collagen is produced gradually, the aim is progressive improvement rather than an immediate dramatic change.
This is particularly relevant when skin is beginning to feel less firm or look less fresh, but there is no need for more intensive resurfacing.
ClearLift and iPixel therefore have different roles. ClearLift offers a gentler approach with less disruption, while iPixel may be chosen when we need to work more directly on acne scarring, lines or noticeable textural changes.
The more intensive laser is not automatically the better option. We want enough treatment to create a useful improvement without treating the skin more aggressively than necessary.
How Do We Decide How Intensive Laser Treatment Should Be?
Two patients with the same concern on paper can require very different treatment plans.
With acne scarring, for example, one person may have relatively mild uneven texture while another has deeper indented scars. Similarly, pigmentation may consist of a few isolated sun spots or more widespread discolouration. We also consider your skin type, sensitivity, previous treatments, current skincare, sun exposure and how much downtime is realistic for you.
For milder concerns, we may start with a gentler approach and review how the skin responds. More established textural changes may justify resurfacing or a course of treatments.
This is also why laser settings are not something that should simply be made “as strong as possible”. Effective treatment is about delivering the right amount of energy for the individual skin and concern.
Can Alma Harmony XL Pro Treatments Be Combined?
Skin concerns often overlap. Sun damage may appear alongside redness, for example, while someone with acne may have active breakouts as well as marks from previous spots.
Different Alma Harmony XL Pro technologies can therefore sometimes be combined when there is a clear reason to address more than one concern. For other patients, treating in stages makes more sense. We might improve active acne first, for example, before reassessing whether residual redness, pigmentation or scarring needs further treatment.
The aim is not to fit as many technologies as possible into one appointment. It is to address concerns in an order that makes sense for the skin.
Can Laser Be Combined With Other Skin Treatments?
Laser can also form part of a wider skin treatment plan because not every visible change can or should be treated with laser.
For pigmentation, medical-grade skincare can be useful between appointments, particularly when ongoing pigment production or sun exposure needs to be managed.
Other treatments have different roles. If dehydration, thinness or reduced skin resilience are also present, treatments such as Skinvive, polynucleotides or MCT Exosomes may be considered separately.
We would usually address the main concern first, allow the skin to respond and then reassess. This helps avoid adding treatments that may not actually be necessary.
FAQs About Alma Harmony XL Pro Laser Treatment
Does Alma Harmony XL Pro Hurt?
Comfort depends on which technology is being used and the intensity of treatment. Some options are gentler than others, and we will explain what you are likely to feel beforehand.
How Long Does It Take to See Results From Laser Treatment?
It depends on what is being treated. Changes in pigmentation may become noticeable differently from improvements that rely on collagen production. Collagen remodelling is gradual, so changes in texture and skin quality can continue to develop over the following weeks and months.
Can I Wear Make-Up After Laser Treatment?
This depends on the treatment. Gentler options may involve little disruption to your normal routine, while resurfacing requires more careful aftercare. You will be given specific guidance following treatment.
Can I Have Laser Treatment Before a Holiday?
Sun exposure can affect when certain laser and light treatments can be performed safely. Tell us about upcoming sunny holidays so that treatment can be timed appropriately.
Is Alma Harmony XL Pro Suitable for Sensitive Skin?
Having sensitive skin does not automatically rule out laser treatment, but the condition of your skin needs to be assessed. If it is irritated or the skin barrier is compromised, we may recommend settling the skin before treatment.
