Tear Troughs, Temples & Temptation: Should You Really Be Filling That?

A patient peers into the mirror, sighing at the dark hollows beneath their eyes and the subtle depressions at their temples. These areas whisper stories of fatigue and time, sparking a common question in the clinic: “Can fillers restore what age has taken?” This blog guides you through the reality behind tear trough fillers, temple fillers, and the psychological temptations of chasing endless volume. Should you really be filling these areas? Let’s unravel the truth.

Understanding Facial Hollowing – Why Tear Troughs and Temples Matter

The tear trough is the delicate groove starting at the inner eye corner, extending into the cheek. It deepens with periorbital hollowing – a hallmark of collagen loss, skin thinning, and fat pad descent. Meanwhile, the temples, often overlooked, lose volume as bone density reduces and temporal fat pads shrink, creating a concave, skeletonised appearance that ages the entire face. Together, these areas critically influence facial harmony, subtly dictating whether a face appears vibrant or fatigued.

Tear Trough Fillers – Miracle or Mistake?

Benefits of Tear Trough Fillers

Under eye fillers can reduce dark shadows, soften under-eye hollows, and refresh tired-looking eyes. By replenishing volume, they restore a smoother transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek, offering a rested, youthful appearance without invasive surgery.

Risks and Complications

However, tear trough treatment risks cannot be understated. Complications include the Tyndall effect, where improperly placed filler appears bluish under thin skin; persistent swelling; or lumpiness. Vascular compromise, while rare, can lead to serious consequences.

When Tear Trough Fillers Aren’t Recommended

Certain patients, especially those with severe skin laxity, prominent eye bags, or extremely thin skin, may not benefit – or may even look worse – after fillers. Alternative solutions, like biostimulators or surgery, might be more appropriate.

Filling the Temples – A Game-Changer or a Gamble?

Why Temple Volume Matters

Hollow temples age the face dramatically, impacting the perceived width of the upper face and the arch of the brows. Restoring temple volume can rejuvenate facial contours, enhance the lateral cheek, and lift surrounding structures subtly.

Techniques for Safe Temple Rejuvenation

The temple is a riskier area and should only be treated by experienced practitioners.

Potential Side Effects

Side effects include asymmetry, overfilling, or vascular compromise. Swelling is common but typically resolves within a week.

When Temptation Strikes – The Psychology of Overfilling

The desire to chase perfection leads some patients to seek multiple fillers in quick succession. Social media filters, unrealistic beauty standards, and “beauty dysmorphia” can fuel overfilling temptation. Recognising when enough is enough protects natural beauty and prevents the dreaded overfilled or “pillow face” look.

The Expert Verdict – Should You Really Fill Tear Troughs or Temples?

Leading aesthetic doctors agree: while tear trough filler and temple filler can offer beautiful results, patient selection, technique, and anatomical understanding are crucial. Alternatives like biostimulators, collagen-stimulating treatments, and tailored skincare may achieve more natural, lasting results for some.

How to Choose the Right Practitioner

Look for a medically qualified injector with a deep understanding of facial anatomy and the ability to offer a holistic facial assessment. Ask about their complication management protocols, experience with delicate zones like the tear trough and temple, and before-and-after results of real patients. Safety, not speed, should be your priority.

Balance Over Bravado

Restoring volume in the tear troughs and temples can transform a tired face into a refreshed one,  but only when approached with caution and artistry. Subtle, natural-looking enhancements are key. It was my first time having botox, and understandably was quite nervous about the end result. However Dr Liesel Holler put my mind at ease and explained everything about the procedure, the after care and what to expect. I have waited 3 months to write this review so i could fully see the results. I am so happy with them, they are natural and solved my forehead line/ frown issues.

I am just about to go back for a top up! I could not be happier with the results and will continue to return to this lovely clinic!
