Celebrating National Women’s Physician Day with Dr Liesel Holler
Every year on the 3rd February, we celebrate National Women’s Physicians Day, a tribute to the inspiring women who have paved the way in the field of medicine. This day honours their achievements, resilience, and dedication to improving healthcare for all of us.
The date marks the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, who was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1849, and whose groundbreaking journey opened the doors for countless women to pursue careers in medicine.
Later, in 1865, the UK saw our first female doctor with Dr. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson becoming the first woman in Britain to qualify as a physician and a surgeon.
Dr Elizabeth Garret Anderson later co-founded the New Hospital for Women in London, which was staffed entirely by women. The hospital provided care to female patients and opportunities for women in medicine.
