Is it safe to get lip fillers?
Lip fillers are one of the most popular dermal filler treatments that we offer in our medical aesthetics clinic in Chislehurst. Patients like how a little bit of lip filler can be used to improve lip hydration, smooth out any lines and add volume. For the most part, lip fillers are a very safe and effective treatment, however there are things that patients can do to make sure that they are safe when they have this treatment.
Choosing the right aesthetics provider
The first and most important way to determine if your aesthetics practitioner can offer lip fillers safely is to make sure that they are medically qualified. Unfortunately, the aesthetics industry is not regulated and this means that anyone can do a training course and learn how to inject lip fillers.
In as little as one day someone with no medical experience can be given training and a certificate that shows that they are qualified to administer lip enhancement treatment. This poses many issues for patients since if your lips are injected by someone with no medical training, and if something were to go wrong, then your injector would not know how to rectify the problem.
What is medical aesthetics?
Medically qualified aesthetics professionals will either be trained doctors, dentists or nurses, who have learnt their aesthetics skills after already having the foundational knowledge of the human body.
Their medical knowledge means they are proficient injectors who understand anatomy, which includes knowing about the arteries and veins in the face. They will also make sure to use quality products, such as Juvederm dermal fillers, which are clinically tested and have been shown to be safe for cosmetic use. Medical aesthetic doctors should also be professional, honest and ethical when they treat their patients.

What could go wrong?
Vascular occlusions are a very serious concern that can occur when injecting lip fillers. Vascular occlusion is caused by a blood vessel becoming blocked by a foreign substance. This can happen when injecting dermal fillers into the lips, but the risk is minimised by making sure that you choose an aesthetics provider who is medically qualified.
If you have a vascular occlusion after a lip filler treatment you will feel a lot of pain which may be accompanied by burning, tingling, swelling or numbness. The lips can also begin to change colour with dark patches being present. If left untreated, patients could end up with tissue death which is known as necrosis.
If you have a vascular occlusion because of lip filler treatment this will need immediate medical attention. In the very rare circumstance of this happening after you have had treatment with a medically trained aesthetics doctor, they will be able to quickly and effectively reverse this concern with hyaluronidase treatment. If you experience this complication from a treatment that has been administered by a practitioner who is not medically trained, they will be unable to rectify the issue.
Other side effects
Thankfully, vascular occlusions are a very rare complication of lip augmentation treatment. There are other more common side effects that can be expected after a lip filler treatment, which may include bruising and swelling or lumps and bumps. These can be managed effectively with advice from your aesthetics doctor.
Can lip filler look natural?
Yes, lip fillers can look very natural! An experienced aesthetics practitioner will be able to assess how much dermal filler a patient needs to achieve natural looking lip filler results, using the right product to treat a patient’s specific concern, whether they be wanting a little more volume, smoothing out wrinkles, or if they are trying to achieve more hydration.

Inexperienced practitioners may place too much dermal fillers into the lips and this can lead to the filler migrating outside of the vermillion border or the lip line. Over-filled and over inflated lips are sometimes referred to as ‘duck lips’ or a ‘trout pout’.
If you have experienced poorly placed lip filler and would like to have your lips dissolved and retreated, a medically trained aesthetics doctor will be able to help you.
